Advising and Counseling

In a welcoming environment, SLAS/EOP conducts a comprehensive assessment of students' needs and assures their academic and personal development by assisting them to realize their full potential. SLAS/EOP practices a holistic and multicultural approach in assisting students to negotiate their personal responsibilities and circumstances with the academic demands of Berkeley. Students receive assistance with selecting courses, declaring a major, meeting graduation requirements, exploring career options, and preparing for graduate/professional school opportunities.

Peer Advising Program

The SLAS Academic Counseling staff pioneered the Peer Advising Program in 1974 to assist the unit in its outreach activities and to assist students in their transition to Berkeley.

The Peers serve as student-to-student advisors and participate in an intensive training program designed to enhance their advising and counseling skills, and to familiarize them with the academic support and student services units at Cal. The knowledge they gain through training, as well as their other experiences as students also serves as a vital resource. In conjunction with other campus resources, the Peer Advisors coordinate programs and activities that are designed to enhance student success, including:

  • Assisting the University in outreaching to prospective students and their parents, by sharing information about their Cal experience and expectations;
  • Facilitating seminar discussions on communication and interpersonal effectiveness skills;
  • Coordinating the Summer Bridge Reunions;
  • Introducing students to scholarships and internship opportunities, such as In-Roads, Marin Foundation, etc.;
  • Developing and implementing courses designed to assist juniors and seniors in preparing for graduate and professional schools.
