Programs and Services

Summer Bridge Counseling/Advising:
Summer Bridge is a 6-week summer, residential, academic program for entering freshpersons, which is coordinated by New Student Services. SLAS coordinates and administers Summer Bridge advising/counseling services, such as Tele-advising, Summer Bridge Seminars, Resource Reception, etc. These activities are designed to facilitate student transition and adjustment to the University. For additional information about Summer Bridge, please check out the Summer Bridge Home Page.

Student Life Resource Reception:
The Resource Reception for new entering students is held at the beginning of the Fall semester, and is designed to facilitate the transition of new entering EOP Freshpersons and Transfer students to Cal. Students receive information from over 30 representatives from different academic and student service units on campus. In a welcoming environment, they have an opportunity to interact with and ask questions.

For more specific information about the EOP Resource Reception, contact Julian Ledesma.

Achievement Awards Program:
Each year Student Life Advising Services (SLAS) honors a select number of Educational Opportunity Program/SLAS-sponsored students with the Student Life Achievement Awards. These awards recognize those students who have worked to achieve academic excellence and who have contributed exemplary community service on campus and/or in the surrounding community. All recipients receive an honorarium of $200 and a certificate of achievement. The Harry L. Morrison Distinguished Student Life Achievement Award of $500 is presented to the most outstanding student.

Achievement Award applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Must be an EOP or SLAS-sponsored student;
  2. Must have demonstrated leadership and service on campus OR in the community at large;
  3. Must have a minimum UCB grade point average of 3.0;
  4. Must have Junior or Senior standing by the Spring semester of the current year.
  5. Must have completed at UCB a minimum of 30 units by the beginning of the current Spring semester (for Transfer Students only);
  6. Must be registered as a full-time undergraduate student.

A committee comprised of students, staff, and faculty convenes to review and select award recipients. A formal ceremony is held in late April, where family and friends of the award recipients, along with the university community gather to celebrate the achievements of these outstanding students. For additional information, contact Fabrizio Mejia, fmejia@berkeley.edu

EOP Emergency Loans:
EOP and SLAS-sponsored students may receive an additional emergency loan after repayment of any outstanding Financial Aid Office loan. New EOP students can receive up to $300.00 and continuing students can receive up to $100.00. These loans must be repaid in 60 days.
Students who do not meet the guidelines for the EOP program must complete the SLAS Sponsorship Application to determine eligibility for an EOP Emergency Loan. Students interested in an EOP Emergency Loan must see a SLAS Academic Counselor.

Discretionary Grants:
EOP and SLAS-sponsored students may qualify for a SLAS Discretionary Grant. Students must submit a completed SLAS Discretionary Grant application.
